How long should you stay in a sauna?

Forty-five minutes of infrared moved core temperature by 0.0°C. Thirty minutes of hot sauna moved it more. What the duration research shows—and how to use a timer well.

The short answer

No study has found an optimal sauna duration. Most people settle somewhere between 10 and 20 minutes in a traditional sauna, and that range is fine—but it comes from custom and comfort, not from a result anyone measured.

The more useful answer is that a duration only means something once you say what heat you are sitting in. Fifteen minutes in an 80°C Finnish sauna and fifteen minutes in an infrared cabin are not two versions of the same thing. They are barely related.

The same 45 minutes is not the same dose

A 2025 crossover study put 20 healthy adults through three different heat sessions and measured what actually happened inside the body. Forty-five minutes of hot water immersion at 40.5°C raised core temperature by 1.1°C. Three ten-minute rounds in an 80°C traditional sauna raised it by 0.4°C. Forty-five minutes in a far-infrared cabin at 45–65°C raised it by 0.0°C—the confidence interval ran from −0.1 to 0.2.

Read that last one again. Three quarters of an hour in the heat, and the measurement barely moved. Meanwhile thirty minutes of traditional sauna, split into rounds, did more. Time is not the dose. Time is how long you were exposed to a dose, and the dose depends on the temperature, the humidity, the equipment, and how acclimated you are.

What the duration studies actually found

The one large dataset on session length comes from the Finnish cohort of 2,315 men aged 42–60, followed for a median of 20.7 years. Compared with sessions under 11 minutes, men whose usual sessions ran over 19 minutes had a lower rate of sudden cardiac death—a hazard ratio of 0.48 (95% CI 0.31–0.75).

The middle band is the interesting part, and it rarely gets quoted. Sessions of 11–19 minutes came in at 0.93 (0.67–1.28). That is essentially nothing. So the data does not describe a gentle slope where every extra minute buys a little more. It shows one group at the top looking different, based on a single question asked once, at the start of the study, about men's usual habits.

The trial that worked never counted minutes

In 2016, researchers ran the passive-heating study with the clearest results to date. Twenty sedentary adults, ten per group, sat in 40.5°C water for 60 minutes, four to five times a week, for eight weeks. Flow-mediated dilatation rose from 5.6% to 10.9%. Arterial stiffness fell. Mean blood pressure dropped from 83 to 78 mmHg.

Here is what matters: the protocol was not really sixty minutes. It was holding rectal temperature at or above 38.5°C, and sixty minutes was how long that took. They prescribed a body temperature. Compare that with the trial that did prescribe a clock—41 adults doing 20–30 minute sauna sessions four times a week for eight weeks—which produced clear heat acclimation and no improvement in endothelial function, arterial stiffness, or blood pressure. A 2025 review of 20 randomized passive-heating trials reached much the same conclusion across the field.

How long is too long?

Forensic researchers reviewed sauna deaths in Finland between 1990 and 2002, in a country where almost everyone bathes regularly. The annual rate was under 2 per 100,000 people. About half the deaths were from natural causes, mostly heart disease, and heat exposure was the cause in a quarter. Half of all cases involved alcohol.

That is the honest risk picture. Sauna is not dangerous for most healthy adults, and the dominant risk factor is not an extra five minutes—it is drinking, or bathing alone with a condition you did not know you had. No research establishes an upper time limit, which is a gap in the evidence rather than permission to sit indefinitely.

  • Leave immediately for dizziness, nausea, headache, weakness, chest discomfort, confusion, or unusual shortness of breath.
  • Never combine heat with alcohol or recreational drugs, and do not bathe alone if you are prone to fainting.
  • Heat, poor sleep, illness, dehydration, and some medications stack. The same session can feel different on a bad day.

Using the clock well

A timer is still worth having. Not because a number protects you, but because without one you either watch a clock the whole time or lose track completely—and both ruin the session. Set a duration you are comfortable with, then let the plan run so you can stop thinking about it.

Two habits make it work. Start shorter than you think and add time slowly across weeks, changing one thing at a time. And treat the ending as part of the session: cool down properly rather than walking straight out. If you are comparing your practice to a published figure, only continuous time in the heat counts—rest between rounds is what resets the load, so three eight-minute rounds are not a 24-minute session.

How long should you stay in a sauna?

There is no proven optimal duration. Most people use 10–20 minutes in a traditional sauna, which reflects custom rather than research. How long should a beginner stay in a sauna?

Common advice of roughly 8–12 minutes is a sensible convention, not a research finding—no study has tested beginner durations. Start shorter than you think you need, treat the first few sessions as learning how your body responds, and add time across weeks rather than within a single session.

Is one long session better than several short rounds?

No evidence favours either. Traditional Nordic practice uses multiple rounds with cooling in between, and a 2025 study found three ten-minute rounds at 80°C raised core temperature by 0.4°C. Note that rounds do not add up to a continuous exposure: the cool-down between them is precisely what resets the thermal load.

How long should you stay in an infrared sauna?

Infrared sessions are usually longer because the thermal load is lower, but longer does not mean equivalent. A 2025 comparison found 45 minutes of far-infrared produced no meaningful core temperature rise, and a separate study of 45-minute sessions in healthy women found no change in blood pressure, arterial stiffness, or heart rate variability.
